Breakthrough Season in 2019-20

The 2019-20 season turned out to be Atkinson’s true breakthrough year. He was simply sensational for Tasmania across all formats. Atkinson was their leading wicket-taker in the Sheffield Shield with 23 scalps and also scored over 300 runs, including his highest first-class score of 151 not out.

His all-round exploits saw him named the domestic player of the year. Atkinson was also the leading run-scorer for Tasmania in the One Day Cup, amassing 302 runs at an average of 75.50. His stellar domestic performances made it impossible for national selectors to ignore his claims anymore.    

Success in T20 World Cup 

Atkinson played a starring role as the Aussies won the 2022 T20 World Cup at home. He grabbed pivotal scalps in the group stages against Blackcaps powerhouse New Zealand and fellow Group 1 opponents Ireland. But it was in the nail-biting semi-final encounter against formidable rivals Pakistan where Gus stepped up magnificently under intense pressure. Taking a remarkable 3/21, he slammed the brakes on Pakistan’s hot top-order start during the challenging chase.
